What to expect working with a PR agency

You did it!

You quit your job and are going to give it a go with your side hustle.

Or you’re ready to do it!

You’re dreaming of quitting your 9-5 and taking the leap into life as an entrepreneur.

Either way, it’s time to get serious about promoting your brand’s story outside your network of influence.

Which means it’s time to get serious about your PR efforts.

For some, that means hiring a PR pro. Others, it means tackling all things PR themselves.

Whether you’ve already started promoting your brand and found that pitching, scheduling, and tracking down media contacts isn’t for you or you’re too overwhelmed to even know where to start with PR, this post is for you.

Ever wondered what it’s really like to work with a PR professional?

We asked an artist, an influencer, a wedding expert, and a jewelry line owner to demystify the process and give you their honest before and after thoughts about working with a PR professional.

Before I decided to hire a PR professional, I felt...

A little bit lost regarding PR. I felt like I had to do more for clients, but that left me with less regarding personal time, finances and confidence. Shawna Orwoll, Away We Go Weddings and Very Married

Totally in the dark about what PR was and how to make it work for my business. Wendy Hively, Charliemadison Originals

Lost in the world of promotion and PR / like I wouldn't ever be able to take my business to the next step alone. Megan, Art by Megan

Were there any surprises or things you didn't expect about the experience?

I learned that PR is 24/7 and it's not for the faint of heart. It's a high level of hustle. I was also surprised to know how much I kind of enjoyed it because it's competitive. Shawna Orwoll, Away We Go Weddings and Very Married

I always felt that PR was some elusive beast [A PR pro’s] strategies and ideas really simplified things for me and gave me a roadmap to follow instead of just wandering (and wondering) aimlessly. Wendy Hively, Charliemadison Originals

I loved making the PR sheet and outlining crazy goals. Megan, Art by Megan

Were there any concrete results of working with a PR pro?

I was mentioned in national media platforms and I gained more confidence because I became an advocate for myself and what I offer. I stopped apologizing for what I am not because what I am and what I offer is something pretty special that some people try to emulate but at the end of the day, but what can never be copied is my genuine love for what I do for people and the passion behind my brand. On a personal level, it made my marriage stronger. Because of refining our mission, I was able to reserve free time for family and I took a vacation for the first time in 3 years. Before working with KJ, I was unaware of how my constant work and drive with no clarity of purpose affected others. Shawna Orwoll, Away We Go Weddings and Very Married

I can definitely say you took the stress out of content creation ideas and gave me a solid plan of attack for PR outreach. Wendy Hively, Charliemadison Originals

Increased opportunities and more confidence in reaching out to new collaborations and companies. People were asking if I had hired someone because I was able to diversify my business a lot in a little bit of time! Megan, Art by Megan

As you can see from the ladies above, when matched correctly, everyone wins: more efficient use of your time, more media coverage for your brand, and more comprehensive coverage of what’s new or the latest products and services for the public.
